Palm Desert Real Estate
Palm Desert is a resort town located in the California Desert’s Coachella
Valley 11 miles east of Palm Springs. The population is approximately
41,200. Neighboring Palm Springs, the golf capital of the world, Palm
Desert has long been a favorite vacation getaway for the traveler who
enjoys relaxation, golf and shopping.
Many visitors are coming from colder climates each year and prefer stay in
Palm Desert during the winter. Each winter the population of these
desert cities like Palm Springs grows by 31,000. In the last couple of
years many people have decided to become a permanent resident of Palm
Springs.
Palm Desert was first known by the name Old MacDonald Ranch, then Palm
Village in the 1920s when date palms were planted. The first residential
development was started in the year 1943 in connection with an Army
maintenance camp in the area. Later an upscale shopping district was
developed known by its now famous name “El Paseo”. Real estate
development started in the year 1948 by the Palm Desert Corporation
which was one of the first to begin to develop real estate.
Possibly the most famous attraction in Palm Desert is the Living Desert Zoo and
Gardens, a combination zoo and botanical garden featuring an extensive
collection of desert plants and animals. It is also the site of the
campus of College of the Desert, the local community college, and also
an extension campus of California State University, San Bernardino and
The University of California Riverside’s Palm Desert Campus.
